Acupuncture is the ancient Eastern art of providing therapy to individuals who have ailments. The principle is that if you are suffering from pain it is because the body’s Qi (Chi) has been disturbed, and the treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into the ‘channels’ which Eastern medicine believe flow around your body, helping your Qi to flow and to re-establish a balance between the body’s Yin and Yang.

What is Acupuncture
Estimates vary but records show that Acupuncture has been practiced continuously for over 3000 years and is regarded as one of the most ancient treatment forms known to man.
Acupuncture works on the principle that any pain or illness that affects your body is because your ‘qi’ (pronounced Chee) or ‘energy’ has been disturbed. In Chinese medicine your ‘qi’ can be disturbed by seven basic emotions which are joy, grief, sadness, fear, anger, fright and worry. Acupuncture treatments therefore are aimed at rebalancing the ‘qi’ and healing the imbalance in these emotions.
The word Acupuncture has latin roots. The latin ‘acus’ means a needle ‘acupuncture’ ‘to puncture with a needle‘. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles, usually no thicker than a human hair, into the body to stimulate acu-points along the channels, or as they are sometimes known, the meridians. These channels or meridians are the Lung Channel, Large Intestine Channel, Stomach Channel, Spleen Channel, Heart Channel, Small Intestine Channel, Bladder Channel, Kidney Channel, Pericardium Channel, Sanjiao Channel, Gallbaldder Channel, Liver Channel, Du Channel and the Ren Channel.
Treating patients with Acupuncture aims to remove blockages in the flow of qi by diffusing lactic acid and carbon monoxide that accumulate in muscle tissue and can cause stiffness. It can also create abnormal pressure on nerves, lymph nodes and the blood vessels which often manifest in adversely affecting the function of the skeletal system and internal organs.
Why use Acupuncture?
People use Acupuncture for a great many reasons although quite often the first acupuncture treatment comes about because standard medicine is not shifting the problem, and people are often desperate to get some relief, particularly from pain. Quite often though, once people have experienced their first few sessions of Acupuncture it becomes something which they can use to maintain a heathy lifestyle rather than just for relief when pain strikes.
At Acupuncture That Works we categorise our treatments into four key areas:
- To relieve the symptoms of sickness including nausea, vomiting and irritable bowel syndrome.
- As an aid for pain relief, particularly back pain, dental pain and muscular pain including sports injuries
- To help with addiction, detoxification, fertility treatments and revitalisation including facial acupuncture
- As an aid towards balanced living including stress problems, insomnia and weight control.
