Have you noticed that a number of the Olympic athletes have different coloured tape on their bodies? Do you know what it is and why? The answer might surprise you as the tape is designed to provide acupressure to various meridians on the body.
This process is known variously as Acupressure taping or Kinesio-taping or sometimes acutaping.
The principle is that by applying pressure to painful areas of the body using this tape, the acupressure tape will help injured areas move whilst the injury or soreness is being treated at the same time. The tape can be used around the neck, back, shoulders, arms and legs and it can also promote good blood circulation. The manufacturers claim it can also help reduce pain and promote a shorter healing time.
Acupressure taping is a relative new method that uses on the basic theory of acupuncture which has been around for over 3000 years, and when success or failure in the Olympics is measured in thousandths of a second, anything that can give just the slightest competitive advantage is worth doing.
If you enjoy sport and want to increase your ability then maybe acupressure or acupuncture may help?
