Sports Massage is generally used to benefit patients who engage in regular physical activity or have sustained a sports related injury. It works by manipulating the soft tissues in the body; specifically this includes muscles, skin, tendons and ligaments- anything that is not bone or cartilage. The aim of this is to help aid the correction of imbalances in the soft tissue that have occurred as a result of regular or strenuous physical activity or recent excessive damage.
It is a type of massage that can not only be used post-injury but as a regular massage prior to and post-exercise. In this way it can help patients improve how they perform, aid in any recovery and prevent any future injury. The main aim works around helping improve the patients physical well-being, focusing on the muscles and connecting tissue as well as toning, balancing, increasing the range of movement in the body.
The techniques used as part of the massage can vary based on an initial assessment by your practitioner in which your size, age and chosen physical activities are all taken into account. Your treatment can include standard techniques in which specific muscles or muscle groups are isolated and then massaged in varying directions and different intensities. These isolated muscles may also be stretched out using either subtle movements or quite deeply in areas depending on what is required. By working in these specific areas our practitioners will concentrate on breaking down any tension in the tissue or separating the different layers to provide relief.
